Kronborg is both a castle and a fortress, located in Elsinore all the way to the Sound. The castle was built in the 1420s by Erik of Pomerania, and is the subject of several intriguing stories. According to legend, it is in Kronborg's cellars that Holger Danske sleeps, and it is also at Kronborg that Shakespeare's play Hamlet takes place. Kronborg burned down in 1629 due to two inattentive craftsmen, but the castle was rebuilt by Christian IV in the following years.
